Family History

Ernest Hart Blackwell was born in 1887 at Cirencester and was the son of Henry and Harriett Blackwell (née Hunt). His father Henry was born in 1842 at Oakey, Wiltshire, and his mother Harriett Hunt was born in 1846 at Aveling, Gloucestershire. They were married in 1872 (Cirencester registration district), and had 15 children, one of whom died in infancy or early childhood. The children, who were all born in Cirencester, were: Ellen b1872, Fred b1873, Charles Hunt b1876, William b1878, Edith b1879, Walter b1881, Sidney b1882, Edwin b1883, Alice Laura b1885, Annie b1885, Dora Jane b1887, Ernest Hale b1888, Daisy Ruth b1890 and Frances Ralph b1892. In the 1911 census his parents were living at Perrotts Brook, Cirencester, and shown as Henry 69 yrs, a domestic gardener, his wife Harriett 66 yrs. Only one child, their son Francis Ralph 19 yrs, an under gardener, was in the home on the night of the census. Ernest's pension record card named Miss Dora Blackwell, 40 Montrose Avenue, Bristol.

Military History

1st Bn King's Royal Rifle Corps Corporal Ernest Blackwell enlisted at Nottingham on 18th November 1914. He was aged 25 yrs and 1 month, residence Clifton, Nottingham, occupation game keeper. Ernest joined the battalion on 22nd November 1914 at its barracks at Winchester. He landed in France on 3rd August 1915 and was killed in action on 29 April 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France (Panel 7).
