Family History

George Percy Smith was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he lived at 37 Burnham Street, Nottingham, he was the son of the late Thomas a hosiery warehouseman and Eleanor Smith née Eyre. Thomas was born in 1855 at Mansfield, he died prior to 1901, Eleanor Eyre was born in 1853, they were married in 1881 at Mansfield and had 5 children, Edith Harriett b1883, Florence Jane b1885 and George Percy born 1894. In the 1911 census the family are living at 32 Middle Furlong Street, Nottingham, Eleanor 58 yrs is a widow, she is living with her children, Edith Harriett 28 yrs a clerk, Florence Jane 26 yrs a hosiery hand and George Percy 16 yrs a hosiery warehouseman.

Military History

Private George Percy Smith enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, killed in action, 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Buried: Gommecourt Wood New Cemetery, Foncquevillers, France. Special Memorial A.5.
