Military History

Chatham Naval Memorial. HMS Hawke was operating in the North Sea when she was sunk by torpedo from German submarine U-9 (Capt Weddigen). Hawke sank in a few minutes with the loss of her commander, 26 officers and 497 men; only 74 of the ship's company of 594 were saved.
