Family History

Charles Frederick William Highman was born in 1880 in Bristol and was the son of the late Frederick William a hop merchant and Julie Ann Highman née Ireland of 14 Mayfield Road, Eccles, Manchester. His father Frederick was born in 1856 in Swindon, Wiltshire and died in 1902 in Lancashire aged 49 yrs and his mother Julie Ann Ireland was born in 1858 at Cheltenham. They were married in 1879 at Cheltenham and went on to have the following children, all of whom were born in Bristol except their final two daughter who were born in Halifax. Charles Frederick William b 1880, Bertram Francis b1883, Arthur Nimrod b1885, Henry Ainsley b1886, Gladys Mary b1890 Halifax and Julia Martha b1893 Haliax Charles Frederick William married his wife Margaret Ethel Eatock in 1904 in Prestwich and they lived at 15, Yew Tree Avenue, Nottingham they had a daughter Nora Margarete born 1909 at Nottingham In the 1911 census he and his family are living at 15 Yew Tree Avenue, Carrington, Nottingham and are shown as Charles Frederick William Highman 30 yrs a designer of advertisments in the printing trade, he is living with his wife Margaret Ethel 33 yrs and their daughter Nora Margarette 2 yrs.

Military History

Sergeant Charles Frederick William Highman enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he was killed in action on 14th November 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
