Family History

Webster Grunnell was born in 1888 at Grimsby, he was the son of Matthew a fisherman and coxswain of the Skegness Lifeboat and the late Mary Grunnell née Smith of Dovedale Villa Alexandra Road, Skegness. Matthew was born in 1864 at Skegness, Mary Smith was born in 1868 in Ireland, she died in 1905 at Skegness she was aged 37 yrs, they were married on 8th March 1888 at The Primitive Methodist Chapel, Grimsby, they went on to have 6 children. His father re married on 18th February to Lydia Bowler born 1875 at Hognaston, Derbyshire, they were married on 18th February 1907 at St Matthews Church, Skegness, they had two children. In the 1911 census his family are living at Dovedale Villa, Alexandria Road, Skegness, Matthew 45 yrs is a fisherman he is living with his second wife Lydia, and 5 of Matthews children. In the same 1911 census Webster had moved out of the family home, he was living at 29 Wood Street, Grimsby with his sister Florence, Webster is 23 yrs his sister Florence 15 yrs they are living with their widowed grandmother Ellen Smith 71 yrs of age. Webster is a fisherman. Webster married Catherine Mildred Patman (born 27th December 1878) they were married on 27th February 1916 at St Lukes Church, Grimsby, they lived at Little Coates, Grimsby. Commencing 25th June 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week. No connection has yet been found for Webster Grunnell and Carrington, Nottingham.

Military History

Private Webster Grunnell enlisted at Grimsby he served with the 12th battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, he was killed in action on 17th October 1916 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
