William Arthur Young was baptised on 17th October 1888 at St John’s Church, Bulwell he was the son of the late Benjamin a brick layers labourer and the late Mary Elizabeth Young née Voce, of 6 Read Yard, Coventry Road, Bulwell. Benjamin was born in 1851 at Nottingham, he died in 1906 aged 55 yrs, Mary Elizabeth Voce was born in 1853 at Annesley she died in 1891 aged 38 yrs, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 6 children. William Arthur married Sarah Elizabeth Elliott (born 1888 Hull) on 26th September 1908 at St John’s Church, Buwell, they lived at 3 Scott Street, Bulwell and had a son John William born 16th February 1909 at Bulwell. In the 1911 census William Arthur Young was living at 21 Coppice Road, High Fields Avenue, Doncaster, he is shown as married and 23 yrs of age, he is sharing the address with 2 boarders. In the same 1911 census we find Sarah Elizabeth Young 23 yrs and married is living at 10 Scott Street, Bulwell with her son John William 2 yrs, she is living with hier brother in Law William Marsden 37 yrs a coal miner and his family. Commencing 29th April 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private William Arthur Young enlisted at Doncaster, he initially served with the service number 21423 in The King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 4th October 1917 whilst serving with the 9th battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
