George Samuel was the son of George and Elizabeth Wildgust (née Burton). His parents were married at Bulwell St Mary the Virgin and All Souls in 1881. They had six children of whom two died in infancy. All were born in Bulwell and there are records of four who were baptised at Bulwell St Mary: Samuel Henry bap. 6 February 1890 d. 1890, Ethel, Annie Mary b. 1895 d. 1895, George Samuel b. 1897 bap. 2 October 1898; Clarence and Abraham Ernest. George and Elizabeth were living on Musters Street, Bulwell, when their daugher Ethel was bapised in 1894 but had moved to Mersey Street by 1898 when George was baptised. In 1901 George (41) a coal miner hewer, and Elizabeth (37) were recorded at 13 Mersey Street with their three surviving children, Ethel (7), George (3) and Clarence (under one year). George snr. died in December 1906 aged 47. In 1911 the widowed Elizabeth, a charwoman, was living at 25 Mersey Street with her four children Ethel a net folder (lace finishing), George a bleacher (lace finishing), Clarence and Abraham (9). The later CWGC records gives his mother's address as 13 Mersey Street. Elizabeth died in August 1937 aged 75.
168th Bde Royal Field Artillery. George died of wounds on 29 October 1918 and is buried in La Vallee-Mulatre Communal Cemetery Extension, France (A. 34). He qualified for the British War Medal and Victory Medal. CWGC - History of the La-Vellee-Mulatre Communal Cemetery & Extension (extract): 'The village was captured by the 1st Northants on the 17th October, 1918. The Communal Cemetery is immediately West of the Church ... . The EXTENSION is on the South side of the Communal Cemetery. It was made by fighting units in October and November 1918, and five British graves were brought in after the Armistice. It now contains the graves of 46 United Kingdom soldiers (mainly of the 1st Division).' (www.cwgc.org)
CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'I have fought the good fight I have finished my course I have kept my faith' (2 Timothy 4:7, KJV) Grave and headstone, Bulwell (St Mary) churchyard, ‘In loving memory of George, the beloved husband of Elizabeth Wildgust, died Decr 18th 1906, aged 47 years. Not my will, O Lord, but thine be done. Also of Mary Cope, his sister, who died Decr. 22nd 1885, aged 29 years. At rest. Also the above named Elizabeth Wildgust who died August 27th 1937, aged 75 years. Reunited. Also their son, Gunner GS Widgust, died of wounds in France October 29th 1918 aged 20 years. At rest.’
