Sydney Josiah Walters was baptised on 2nd September 1894 at St Johns Church, Bulwell, he was the son of the late Josiah Walters a coal miner and Alice Walters née Walker, who lived at Quary Road, Bulwell at the time of Sydneys baptism. His father Josiah was born in 1868 at Bromagrove, he died in 1901 aged 33 yrs, his mother Alice Walker was born in 1866 at Bulwell, they were married on 8th September 1888 at St John’s church, Bulwell, they went on to have 5 children. His mother later married Joseph Dennis a blast furnaceman and had two further children. In the 1911 census the family are living at 38 Hazel Street, Bulwell, Nottingham, Joseph Dennis 51 yrs a blast furnaceman is living with his wife Alice 44 yrs and her children Cyril Walters 19 yrs Sidney Joseph 16 yrs no occupation listed and Edith 14 yrs of age.

Military History

Private Sydney Josiah Walters enlisted in Derby whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment he was killed in action on 23rd December 1916 and is buried at Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm), Belgium. Plot 6. Row Q. Grave 6.
