Samuel Unwin was born in 1895 at Nottingham, he was the son of Thomas a coal miner contractor and Hannah Unwin née Marsden of 35 Hart Street, Bulwell. His father Thomas was born in 1851 at Brampton, Derbyshire, his mother was born in 1857 at Chesterfield they were married on 26th December 1877 at Brampton, Derbyshire, they went on to have 11 children sadly 1 was to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 32 Hart Street, Bulwell, Thomas 60 yrs is a coal miner contractor, he is living with his wife Hannah 58 yrs and their children, Sidney 25 yrs a coal miner hewer, Joe 22 yrs a coal miner hewer, Henry 19 yrs a lace cleaner, Mary 17 yrs a lace dresser, Sam 16 yrs a lace dresser and Robert 13 yrs a scholar.
Private Samuel Unwin, enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, served with the 16th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment.He died of wounds on 13th November 1916. He is buried in Bouzincourt Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref. I.1.3).

No one knows how much we miss him, none but aching hearts can tell; the circle of our home is broken, but God does all things well. – From his loving mother, brothers Joe, Robert (in France), Cyril, and sister Mary.“UNWIN. – In loving memory of Private Samuel Unwin, Sherwood Foresters, who died November 13th, 1916, from wounds received on the Somme.
