Family History

Bernard was born on 30th May 1882 in South Leverton and was the son of Reverend Samuel Bond and Emily Kate Bond née Worts. His father was born in 1849 in Scotforth, Lincolnshire, and his mother Emily Kate Worts was born in 1851 in Waterbeach, Cambridgshire. They were married in 1872 in Chesterton, Cambridgshire, and went on to have four children: Agnes b1875 in the Cape Colonies, Bernard b. 30 May 1882 South Leverton Mary b1884 and Basil Kendall b1889 London.In the 1911 census the family was living at The Vicarage at Woodborough and shown as Samuel Bond 62 yrs a clerk in holy orders, his wife Emily Kate 60 yrs and their daughter Mary 27 a governess together with two servants, a cook and a housekeeper. Also in the household, but listed as visitors, were his son Bernard 28 yrs a commercial traveller in the tobacco industry, his wife Eleanor 20 yrs and their son Geoffrey Bond (2 months, b. Nottingham). Bernard and Eleanor (née Jarvis, b. 1891 Bedford) had married in Bedford on 20 October 1910.

Military History

Lieutenant Bernard Bond, 19th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire) Regiment, attached to the 11th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). He died of wounds on 2nd August 1916 and is buried in Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France (grave ref. 1.D.18)

His brother, Gallipoli veteran Rev. Basil Kendall Bond, M.C., Royal Army Chaplains' Department, also served in the Great War . Retford Times 11/8/1916'News has reached Mrs Bond of Lowdham, that her husband Lieut Bernard Bond, Sherwood Foresters, died of wounds on Aug 2. Lieut Bond who was brother of Captain the Rev B K Bond, B F (late curate of Ordsall) was in the service of Messrs John Player Limited as a traveller for 12 years prior to volunteering his services on the outbreak of war. Having received a training under Captain Trotman in the Nottingham OTC, he was granted a commission in the Sherwoods about 18 months ago and was and went to the front with a draft early this year. The deceased officer was the son of the late Rev Samuel Bond who was the vicar of Woodborough for 16 years.'
