Family History

Archie Stevenson was born in 1893 at Bulwell, he was the son of the late Arthur a colliery banksman and Florence Stevenson née Joyce of 8 Forest Road, Bulwell. His father Arthur was born in 1862 at Bulwell, he died in 1913 aged 51 yrs his mother Florence Joyce was born in 1865 at Stamford, Lincolnshire, they were married on 22nd October 1888 at St John’s church, Bulwell, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at 8 Forest Road, Buwell, Arthur 29 yrs is a colliery banksman, he is living with his wife Florence 46 yrs and their children, Horace 19 yrs a painter, Archie 17 yrs a hosiery hand, Herbert 13 yrs a scholar and Claude 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Private Archie Stevenson enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Bulwell, he served with the 2/5th battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he died of wounds on 26th February 1917 and is buried at Aveluy Wood Cemetery (Lancashire Dump) Mesnil Martinsart, France.

Personal inscription CWGC headstone: 'Their glory shall not be blotted out’Inscription headstone Northern Cemetery, Bulwell, Nottingham: 'In loving memory of Arthur the beloved husband of Florence Stevenson who died Jany. 8th 1914 aged 52 years. Thy will be done. Also of their dearly loved sons who died in France from wounds received in action. Archie died February 26th 1917 aged 24 years (interred Avelry Wood Cemetery France). Herbert died March 12th 1917 aged 20 years (interred Blangy Communal Cemetery France). Also of the above named Florence Stevenson who died July 20th 1925 aged 60 years. Reunited.'
