Family History

Theophilus (Theo) was the son of George Henry and Phoebe Smith and the brother of George Henry, Oliver and Gertrude Mary Smith. In 1911 they lived at 65 Broomhill Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. The family was living at 42 Newcastle Street, Bulwell, at the time of Theo's death and later at 146 St. Ann's Well Road, Nottingham, the address given for his mother on the CWGC record. His mother, Phoebe, died on 11 October 1941 aged 80 and his father, George, died on 9 April 1943 aged 84.

Military History

Served as 'Theo' Smith. Theophilus Smith served with the 1/7th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment) (Robin Hood Rifles). He was killed in action on 13th October 1915; having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.

Basford Cemetery, damaged headstone, part inscription survives: 'Also Theo, brother ... who was killed in action on the Hohenzollern [Redoubt] Oct.13.1915 in his 21st year. Duty nobly done. Also the above named Phoebe Smith who died Octr. 11th 1941, aged 80 years. Till we meet again. Also George H Smith died April 9th 1943 aged 84 years. Reunited.' Nottingham Evening Post, 13 December 1915; photograph and caption: 'Pte T Smith, 1/7th Robin Hoods, 42 Newcastle Street, Bulwell, killed in action Oct. 13th, aged 21 (sic).'
