Percy Smith was born in 1885 at Nottingham, he was the son of William Smith a coal miner hewer and Sarah Smith née Newbut of Bulwell.
His father William was born in 1841 at Nottingham his mother Sarah Newbut was born in 18142 at Nottingham, they were maried on 25th April 1859 at St Leodegarius Church, Basford., they went on to have 10 children.
In the 1911 census Percy is living with his widowed mother Sarah at 77 Oxford Street, Bulwell, his mother is 60 yrs and a widow, he is shown as Percy Smith 26 yrs and is a shop assistant.
He was the husband of Annie Elizabeth Frost (born 7th April 1886 ) they were married in 1913 at Nottingham, they lived at 43, Key Street, Bulwell, Nottingham, Annie brought 3 children to the marriage Vera Frost born 8th January 1909, Edith Mabel Frost born 10th July 1910 and Ida Frost born 19th April 1912, they had a son William Smith born 19th March 1914.
Commencing 23rd October 1916 his widow was awarded apension of 22 shillings and 6 pence a week.
Private Percy Smith enlisted at Nottingham, on 9th May 1915, giving his address as 77 Oxford Street, Bulwell, giving his age as 29 yrs and 8 months he was a town labourer, he served with the 10th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he was killed in action, 14th February 1916, aged 31, during heavy German shellfire and the explosion of a German mine, prior to the German attack of the front line trenches, near the canal to the south-east of Ypres, Belgium.
