Family History

John was born in 1890 in Ironville,Derbyshire he was baptised in Ironville on 24th April 1890, and was the son of Samuel Pitt and Eliza Pitt née Radford. His father Samuel Pitt was born in 1857 in West Bromwich and his mother Eliza Radford was born in 1863 in Kilburn, Derbyshire , they were married in 1887 in Belper , they had 3 further children, Thomas b1888 William b1887 and Edith b1889 . His father Samuel died in 1892 in Ironville he was 35 yrs of age. John married his wife Gertrude Ethel Blackner ( born 1888 Basford) in 1908 in Nottingham, they go on to have 2 children , Edith Gertrude b1909 and Elsie b1911 both were born in Basford In the 1911 census John and his family were living at 13 Kings Lake Street, Attercliffe in Sheffiled, and are shown as John 21 yrs a tongs man in a forge ,he is living with his wife Gertrude 23 yrs and their 2 daughters Edith Gertrude 2 yrs and Elsie 3 months. The family later lived at 130 Bradford Westham Street Bulwell Nottingham. At the time of his death the family were living at 7 Scott Street, Bulwell.

Military History

Rifleman John Pitt, enlisted in Nottingham, he gave his place of birth as Codnor Park, Derbyshire and his residence as Bulwell, Nottingham, he served in the 13th Battalion Rifle Brigade. He was killed by shellfire on 14th March 1916. and is buried in De Cuisine Ravine British Cemetery, Basseux,
