Samuel Henry was the second son of Samuel Henry and Eliza Ellen Pendleton (née Farnsworth). His father was born in 1867 (reg. Basford) and his mother in 1871 (reg. Basford) and were married at Basford St Leodegarius on 28 February 1866. They had eight children who were born in Bulwell/Basford; two children died in infancy. Their surviving children were Harriett Ellen b. 1887, Ethel Mary b. 1889, James Frederick b. 1891, Samuel Henry birth registered 1895 (J/F/M), Harold Hector b.1900 and Agnes Florence b. 1902. The two children who died in infancy were 'female Pendleton' b. 1893 (A/M/J) d. 1893 (A/M/J, 'female Pendleton') and Agnes Bertha b. 1897 d. 1898. In 1891 Samuel, a pit banksman, and Eliza were living on Whiteman Road, Basford, with their two daughters, Harriett (3) and Ethel (1). By 1901 they had moved to 5 West Gate, Old Basford: Samuel, a collier above ground, Eliza, Harriett (13) a wicker upholsterer, Ethel, James (10), Samuel (6) and Harold (10 months). The youngest child, Agnes, was born the following year. The family was living at 64 Chatham Street, Bulwell, in 1911. In the home on the night of the census were Samuel, an insurance agent, Eliza, Ethel May a cotton worker, James a cabinet maker, Samuel a brick maker (brickyard) and Harold and Agnes (8) who were at school. The eldest daughter, Harriett, had married John William Buxton, a meat salesman, in 1908 and they and their son Hedley (2) were living on Bannerman Road, Bulwell. The eldest son, James, died in 1912 (buried 4 January). Samuel Henry jnr. married Annie Johnston (or Johnson) in 1917 (reg. O/N/D). Annie had a son, Dennis R Johnson b. May 1916. The WW1 Pension Ledgers record gave her son's name as Dennis R Johnson Pendleton but other records use the surname Johnson. Annie married secondly Frank B Smith in 1919. In 1939 when the England & Wales Register was compiled Frank and Annie (b. 1890) were living on Broomhill Road, Bulwell, with their son Frank (b. 1920) and Annie's son Dennis 'Johnson (Smith).' Annie died in 1978. Eliza Ellen Pendleton died in August 1936 and in 1939 the widowed Samuel, a retired caretaker, was living at 29 Ockerby Street, Bulwell, with his married daughter Agnes and her husband John B Potter a hairdresser (m. 1932). Samuel died in October 1943; his daughter Agnes died five years later in July 1948. The surviving son, Harold Hector, served in the war in the Royal Navy (M31775 ASBR - Sick Berth Rating). He joined on a Hostilities Only engagement on 3 June 1918 and served at RN Hospital Haslar, Gosport, Hampshire, from 26 June to 5 June 1919 when he was invalided from the RN. He later claimed a disability pension.
6th Bn Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) Samuel died of wounds on 21 March 1918. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France (grave ref. XXXI. K. 10). CWGC - History of Etaples Military Cemetery (extract): 'During the First World War, the area around Etaples was the scene of immense concentrations of Commonwealth reinforcement camps and hospitals. It was remote from attack, except from aircraft, and accessible by railway from both the northern or the southern battlefields. In 1917, 100,000 troops were camped among the sand dunes and the hospitals, which included eleven general, one stationary, four Red Cross hospitals and a convalescent depot, could deal with 22,000 wounded or sick. In September 1919, ten months after the Armistice, three hospitals and the Q.M.A.A.C. convalescent depot remained.' (www.cwgc.org)
CWGC headstone personal inscription: 'Faithful unto death' CWGC: 'Son of Samuel Hy. Pendleton and Eliza E. Pendleton, of Bulwell; husband of A. Pendleton, of 29, Ockerby St., Bulwell, Nottingham.' The address was probably that of Samuel & Eliza (see 'Family history') Registers of Soldiers' Effects: His widow Annie was his sole legatee.
