Family History

John Wombwell (junior)was born in 1896 at Kersall and was the son of John (senior) a farmer and Sarah Wombell, née Tyler of Kersall, Kneesall, Newark. His father John (senior) was born in 1845 at Didcot, Berkshire, his mother Sarah Tyler was born in 1862 at Norwell Woodhouse, they were married in 1891, their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have the following children, James Tyler b1893, John b1896 and Charlotte b1898 all were born at Kersall. In the 1911 census the family are living at Kersall village and are shown as John Wombwell (senior) 65 yrs a farmer, he is living with his wife Sarah 49 yrs and their children, John 13 yrs a farmers son working on his farm and Charlotte 11 yrs

Military History

Private John Wombwell enlisted at Newark and served with the 9th battalion Norfolk Regiment , he died of pneumonia on 27th October 1918 at a general hospital in France, he is buried at Tourgeville Military Cemetery, Calvados, France.gave reference 4.E.19

Extra Information

His elder brother James Tyler Wombwell enlisted on 11th November 1914, he was 22 yrs and 1 month of age, he served with the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters and landed in France on 25th February 1915. He was wounded (gun shot wound to his right leg on 5th August 1918) and discharged from the army being no longer fit for service on 14th March 1919, he was awarded a Silver War Badge number 19832
