Family History

Alfred Walker was born in 1892 at Wellow and was the youngest son of James an agricultural drainage worker, and the late Elizabeth Walker née Cougill of The Cottage, Wellow Green, Wellow, His father James was born in 1849 at Manchester, his mother Elizabeth Cougill was born in 1852 at Wellow she died in 1918 aged 66 yrs, they were married in 1870 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly two died in infancy or early childhood, their children recorded on the 1891/1901/1911 census were Arthur b1876, Hannah b1878, Ellen b1881, James b1883, John Thomas b1885, Henry b1886, Louis Mary b1890, and Alfred b1892, all were born at Wellow In the 1911 census the family lived at Ompton Newark Nottinghamshire and were shown as James Walker 62 yrs a agricultural drainer on the Rufford Estate. he is living with his wife Elizabeth 59 yrs and their children, Hannah 33 yrs and Alfred 18 yrs a bricklayes labourer on the Thoresby Estate.

Military History

Private Alfred Walker enlisted at Derby and served with 12th Battalion Royal Scots (Lothian Regiment) He was killed in action on 12th October 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cott memorial, Belgium panel 11-14

Extra Information

His older brother John Thomas Walker 240480 enlisted at South Kirby, Yorkshire and served with the 2/5th battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, He was killed in action on 3rd May 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Arras memorial bay 7.
