Family History

Frederick James (junior) was born in 1897 at Nottingham, he was the son of FrederickJames (senior) a coal miner hewer and Susannah James née Lakin of 75, Repton Road, Bulwell, Nottingham. His father Frederick James (senior) was born in 1872 at Somerset, his mother Susannah Lakin was born in 1875 at Selston, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they had 9 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 39 Chatham Street, Bulwell Frederick 39 yrs is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Susannah 36 yrs and their children, Ethel 17 yrs a lace dresser, George 15 yrs a coal miner pony driver, Frederick 13 yrs a pottery worker, John William 10 yrs, John 8 yrs and Winnie 1 year of age.

Military History

Private Frederick James enlisted on 4th October 1915 at Nottingham. He was posted to the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 8th February 1916 and went to France on 9th February 1916. He was posted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys) Regiment, on 28th February 1916 and was killed in action, on 4th July 1916, aged 19, during the attack on the German positions near Fricourt, France.Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
