Charles was born in Bulwell in 1884 and was the son of William a coal hewer and Elizabeth Hames of 2 Anchor Terrace , Main Street, Buwell. They had six children , George ,Charles Henry , Mary, Edith , Robert, Harold. In the 1891 census he is living with his family at 8 Hart Street, Bulwell he is 7 years of age and a scholar. In the 1901 the family are living at 31 St Albans Road Bulwell, Charles is aged 17 years, coal miner below ground, By 1911 - the family are living at 34 Minerva St, Bulwell , however only Elizabeth is present with four of her children , William and Charles are not shown at the address . In 1913 Charles is married in Nottingham to Mary Rebecca Ayesthorpe. John William Hames (67108) was Cousin Of Charles Henry Hames (67107) and both died with 1st battalion. Military History

67107 Private Charles Henry Hames is likely to have enlisted in March 1916, into the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) After training he was posted to the 1st battalion and in June 1917 they were based in Ypres. The diarist mentioned that most of June was warm and fine.... "and that considering the battalion was frequently quartered in the town of Ypres, which the enemy persistently shelled, the casualties - 10 killed or died of wounds and 54 wounded - cannot be regarded as excessive" Unfortunately for Charles he was one of the men wounded, removed to Dickebusch were he died of his wounds. He was buried in the cemetery adjacent to the Field Ambulance at Dickebusch New Military Cemetery Extension, grave II.A.10
