Family History

Fred Henry Edwards was born in 1894 at Bulwell he was the son of James Henry a coal miner hewer and Harriett Edwards née Fells of 24 Farley Street, Bulwell. His father James Henry was born in 1865 at Claycross, Derbyshire, his mother Harriett Fells was born in 1870 at Marston, Bedfordshire, they were married on 8th November 1890 at St John’s Church, Bulwell, they went on to have 9 children, sadly 1 died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family are living at 128 Ragdale Road, Bulwell, James Henry is 46 yrs and is a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Harriett 41 yrs and their 7 children. In the same 1911 census we find that Fred has left the family home, he is living at Garfit House Annesley, he is 16 yrs and is a general labourer on a farm, he is living with John Rudd 53 yrs a farmer and his family.

Military History

Private Fred Edwards enlisted on 3rd February 1913 at Kimberley giving his address as 126 Ragdale Road, Bulwell, he was a dyer working for Bromleys of Bulwell giving his age as 18 yrs and 7 months. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and was embodied for war on 5th August 1914. He landed in France on 2nd March 1915 and was killed in action on 27th June 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium.
