Military History

Clark's captain wrote to Clark's bereaved parents 'I cannot express to you my great sorrow at losing so great a man and such a valuable sergeant. He has been with me both as a corporal and sergeant for some considerable time. His men always looked up to him as their leader and on many occasions there has not been an officer to his platoon thereby always proving himself to be a capable leader of his men. He was just turning the corner of a road at the back of the trenches in company with an officer and a number of his men when a large enemy shell landed in amongst them killing the officer and several of the men.'
