Family History

James Harris was born in 1888 at Bingham and was the son of Francis a farm labourer and Hannah Harris née Cowdell of Nottingham Road, Bingham. His father was born in 1856 in Bingham and his mother Hannah Codwell was born in 1858 also in Bingham, they were married in 1878 in Bingham and went on to have 12 children two of whom sadly died in infancy or early childhood, their children listed in the 1891/1901/1911 census were : - Miriam b1876, Annie b1878, Harriet 1880, Phoebe 1882, Frances 1883, Kate b1887, James b1889, Zillah b1893, Harriett b1895, Frank b1897 and Hannah b1900, all the children were born in Bingham. In the 1911 census the family are living at Nottingham Road, Bingham, Francis is the head of the family 55 years his wife Hannah is 53 years, son James 23 years , daughter Harriett 17 years, Frank is 14 years of age and a farm labourer born Bingham and Hannah daughter 11 years

Military History

Lance Corporal James Harris enlisted in Nottingham and initially served with the service number 14/20815 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 11th October 1915 and was serving with the 6th battalion Northumberland Fusiliers when he died on 10th April 1918, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.

Extra Information

His brother Frank Harris served and died in the Great War , he enlisted on 12th November 1913 and served with the 1st battalion Sherwood Forestrs , he landed in France on 3rd January 1915 and was killed in action on 6th February 1915, his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial
