Family History

George Berridge was born in 1884 in Bulwell and was the son of Frederick Berridge a general dealer and Clara Amelia Berridge née Larter of 88 St Albans Road, Bulwell. His father Frederick was born in 1854 in Coats, Cambridgshire, and his mother Clara Amelia Larter was born in 1855 in Tannington, Suffolk. They were married in 1876; their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, and they went on to have the following children, James b1881, George b1884, Stephen b1888 and Albert b1892. In the 1911 census the family are living at 88 St Albans Road, Bulwell and are shown as Fred 57 yrs a general dealer, who is living with his wife Clara Amelia and their son Albert 19 yrs, assisting in his father's business. George married his wife Mabel Hurst on 31st March 1906 at Nottingham. They went on to have the following children, Lizzie Francis b1906 Basford, George b1908 Leicester, May b1910 Bulwell and Mabel b1916 in Burton on Trent. In the 1911 census the family are living at 15 Logan Street, Bulwell, and are shown as George 27 yrs a flock manufacturer, who is living with his wife Mabel 22 yrs (born Basford) and their children Lizzie Francis 5yrs, George 3yrs and May 1yr. Probate was proven on 31st December 1918 at Lichfield and shows him as George Berridge, 6 Goodman Street, Burton on Trent, gunner R.F.A. died 28th November 1918 at Catterick Military Hospital, Yorkshire. Administration was awarded to his wife, Mabel Berridge. Effects of £835 and 12 shillings. His father Frederick died on 25th November 1921, he was 67 yrs of age, and his mother Clara died on 18th November 1926 aged 74 yrs.

Military History

Gunner 204898 George Berridge served with the Royal Field Artillery. He died on 28th November 1918 at the Military Hospital Catterick, Yorkshire. His body was returned to his family and he is buried in the family grave at Nottingham Northern Cemetery, Bulwell.

Inscription on family gravestone, Nottingham Northern Cemetery, Bulwell: ‘In loving memory of Frederick Berridge died November 25th 1921 aged 67 years. Also of Clara wife of the above died November 18th 1926, aged 74 years. Also of George, son of the above, died November 28th 1918, aged 34 years. Also Olga Eve the beloved daughter of Fred and Jane E Berridge, died May 25th 1930 aged 17 years. Also Jane Ellen, beloved wife of Frederick James Berridge who died March 9th 1932, aged 54 years. Also the above named Frederick James Berridge, who died Sept. 18th 1949, aged 71 years. Peace perfect peace.’
