Family History

Anthony Alton was born in 1877 in Bulwell the son of Willis John Alton a coal miner and Ann Alton (née Elliott). His father was born in 1853 at Cinderhill and his mother in 1852 at Bulwell. Married in 1871, they had fifteen children - Mary Elizabeth b.1871, Edward b.1872, Sarah b.1875, Anthony b.1877, John Willis b.1878, Percy b.1877, Edgar b.1882, Phoebe b.1885, Florence b.1887, Lilly b.1889, Thomas b.1890, George b.1892, Ernest b.1893, Albert b.1895 and William b.1898. In 1911 they lived at 10 Chatsworth Street, Bulwell. Thomas, George, Ernest and Albert were miners and Lilly a machinist. Anthony married Sarah Elizabeth Caplin in 1903 at Nottingham and they had five children - Willis John b.1904, Anthony b.1906, John b.1908, Leslie b.1909 and Winifred b.1911. In 1911 they lived at 1 Edward Place, Main Street Bulwell.

Military History

Anthony Alton enlisted at Nottingham initially serving (7459) in the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment, later with the Tunnelling Depot, formerly 176th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers. He died at the Military Hospital, Colchester, on 19th June 1918. He is buried in Nottingham Northern Cemetery Grave Reference: E 6 9.

Extra Information

One of his brothers 22 year old Albert Alton was killed in action 23/10/1917 serving with 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
