Albert Alton was born in 1895 in Bulwell the son of Willis John Alton a coal miner and Ann Alton (née Elliott). His father was born in 1853 at Cinderhill and his mother in 1852 at Bulwell. Married in 1871, they had fifteen children - Mary Elizabeth b.1871, Edward b.1872, Sarah b.1875, Anthony b.1877, John Willis b.1878, Percy b.1877, Edgar b.1882, Phoebe b.1885, Florence b.1887, Lilly b.1889, Thomas b.1890, George b.1892, Ernest b.1893, Albert b.1895 and William b.1898. In 1911 they lived at 10 Chatsworth Street, Bulwell. Thomas, George, Ernest and Albert were miners and Lilly a machinist.
Albert Alton enlisted on 8th June 1915 at Nottingham. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and on 6th February 1916 he embarked from Southampton to France. He served on the Western Front until on 11th September 1916 when he received gunshot wounds to his left leg and foot for which he was admitted to a stationary hospital. On 15th September 1916 was returned to England for treatment. Following a recovery, he was again posted to the Western Front, embarking from Folkstone on 16th January 1917.
Tyne Cot Memorial Panel 99 to 102 & 162 to 162A His brother Anthony Alton died of wounds 19/6/1918 received serving with a Royal Engineers Tunnelling Company and is buried in Nottingham Northern Cemetery Grave Reference: E 6 9.
