Lancelot Arthur Allcock

Lancelot Arthur was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Ann Allcock (née Samon, also Salmon) His father Richard was born in Annesley in 1869 (J/A/S Basford), the son of Robert and Sarah Allcock. In 1891 he was a coal miner and living with his parents in Annesley, the only one of his siblings to still be at home. His mother Elizabeth Ann was born in Selston in 1872 (Salmon, A/M/J Basford), the daughter of Joseph and Ann Salmon (sic). In 1881 the family was living in Kirkby Woodhouse but by 1891 Elizabeth (19) was a live-in general domestic servant in the household of Edward Poyser, a pawnbroker, at Millicent Road, West Bridgford, Nottingham. Richard and Elizabeth were married at Annesley All Saints on 6 June 1892 (A/M/J Basford). According to the information provided on the 1911 census they had had only four children who would be: Bernard b. 10 June 1895 (J/A/S Basford-Samon), Lancelot Arthur b. 1897 (A/M/J Basford-Samon), Ernest b. 29 July 1899 (J/A/S Basford-Samon) and Horace Everett b. 19 December 1901 birth registered 1902 (J/F/M Basford-Salmon). The children were born in Annesley/Annesley Woodhouse. However, there are three births registered in the name of Allcock, mother's surname Salmon, who might also be Richard and Elizabeth's children: Leonard b. 1908 (O/N/D Basford) d. 1908 (O/N/D Basford), Willis b. 7 November 1912 (O/N/D Basford) and Evelyn R. b. 24 December 1913 birth registered 1914 (J/F/M Basford). Both Willis and Evelyn have been traced on the 1939 England & Wales Register; Evelyn (married name Hill) at 11 James Street, Kirkby in Ashfield, and Willis at 38b Wesley Street, Annesley, living in the same household as Elizabeth A Allcock (b. 16 March 1872), a widow. In 1901 Richard (31) a coal miner, and Elizabeth (29) were living at 30 Sampson Street, Annesley Woodhouse, with their three sons Bernard (5), Lancelot (3) and Ernest (1). Horace was born in December the same year. By 1911 the family was living at 16 Reform Street, Annesley. Richard was still working as a coal miner hewer and his two eldest sons, Bernard (15) and Lancelot (13) were both described as coal miners/pit pony drivers (underground) while Ernest (11) and Horace (9) were at school. The CWGC record also gives Richard and Elizabeth's address as 16 Reform Street. Richard probably died in 1935 (J/A/S Basford) and Elizabeth in 1945 (A/M/J Basford). Of Lancelot's siblings: Bernard married Amy Cooper (b. 29 October 1896) in 1919 (A/M/J Basford). In 1939 they were living in Southwell RDC, with their daughter May (b. 9 March 1920) a ladies garment cutter; Bernard was a coal miner. Bernard died in 1975 (O/N/D Mansfield). Ernest married Kate Cook (b. 6 January 1896) in 1919 (A/M/J Basford). In 1939 they were living in Hucknall; Ernest was a coal hewer. Also in the household were Margaret Allcock (later Twine) b. 9 July 1920 a hosiery worker and Ernest Allcock b. 23 December 1921 a bricklayer. Ernest died on 17 May 1974 (A/M/J Basford); he was still living in Hucknall. Horace married Ethel M Wilson (b. abt 1903) in 1925 (A/M/J Basford). Ethel died in 1938 and in 1939 Horace was living at 58 Sherwood Street, Annesley Woodhouse. He married Doris Wright in 1940 (J/F/M Basford). Horace died on 11 November 1980; he was then living in Kirkby in Ashfield.
