Family History

Jacob Hardy Smith was born on 30th January 1889 a Leicester, he was the son of John Hardy Smith a leather manufacturer and Fanny Margaret Smith née Smith of 1 Granville Road, Leicester. His father John Hardy Smith was born in 1838 at Aston on Trent, his mother Fanny Margaret Smith was born in 1849 at Castle Donnington, Leicestershire, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow registration district, they went on to have 5 children twin elder brothers Charles Edwin and John Arthur, a sister Margaret Elizabeth and a brother James Francis. In the 1901 census the family was living at Maplewell Upper New Walk, Leicester Jacob was the only child living at home, Jacob went to Wigston Grammar School, Leicester. In the 1911 census the family are living at 1 Granville Road, Leicester, John Hardy 73 yrs is a leather manufacturer, he is living with his wife Fanny Margaret, 62 yrs and their son Jacob 22 yrs a leather dresser

Military History

Captain Jacob Hardy Smith served with the Nottingham University Officer training corps, early in 1914 he was gazetted to a commission in the Special reserve of the Rifle Brigade, after completing his training at Cork war broke out and he was mobilised and attached to the 3rd battalion Rifle Brigade. Later transferring to the 6th battalion he went out to France in August 1914. He died of wounds received in action on 29th August 1916 at No 2 Stationary Hospital, Somme, France, he is buried at Abbeville Communal cemetery, France.
