Walter John Robert Pacey was born in 1891 in Newcastle upon Tyne and was the son of John William Pacey a chief engineering draughtsman at a colliery and Mary Elizabeth Pacey née Adamson His father John William was born in 1864 in Buckinghamshire, his mother Mary Elizabeth Adamson was born in 1860 in Rochdale, Lancashire; they were married in 1887 in Rochdale and had a further son William Reginald Pacey born 1897 in Chesterton, Staffordshire. In the 1911 census the family are living at Mansfield Road, Heanor, Derbyshire, and are shown as John William 47 yrs a chief engineering draughtsman at a colliery , he is living with ths wife Mary Elizabeth 51 yrs and their two sons , Walter John Robert 20 yrs an apprentice engineer & draughtman and William Reginald 14 yrs a schoolboy
Fitter Staff Sergeant Walter John Robert Pacey, enlisted at Woolwich, Kent and served with No. 2 Depot Royal Garrison Artillery (formerly 23rd Heavy Battery). He landed in France on 14th September 1915 and died of wounds on 18th July 1916 at Egginton Military Hospital, England. He was buried in Risley (All Saints) Churchyard.
Obituary published 19th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “PACEY. – Died of wounds, at Egginton Military Hospital, July 18th, 1916, Staff-Sergeant W. J. R. Pacey, R.G.A. (Nottingham University O.T.C.), aged 26 years, elder son of J. W. and M. E. Pacey, Claremont, Sandiacre.
