Family History

Joseph Walter Harris was born on 19th June 1889 at Lincoln he was the son of George Harris an engine fitter and Sarah Ann Harris née Thacker of Swallow Beck, Lincoln. George was born in 1859 and Sarah Ann Thacker was born in 1861 both were born in Lincoln, they were married in 1883 in Lincoln, they had 3 children, one of which sadly died in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census the family were living at Swallow Beck, Lincoln, George 52 yrs is a retired engine fitter, he is living with his wife Sarah Ann 50 yrs of age. Joseph was educated at the Lincoln Grammar School and later at Nottingham University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree and was part of the Officer Training Corps, He was married to Mabel Laughton on 3rd October 1914 at Grimsby.

Military History

Joseph Walter Harris was gazetted to Second Lieutenant 3rd Lincolnshire Regiment on 15th May 1914 and to Lieutenant on 30th January 1915. He landed in France on 2nd December 1914. he was killed in action on 2nd June 1915 at Hooge having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial.
