Robert Ivan Doncaster was born in 1897 in Sandiacre, and was the son of factory owner Robert and Gertrude Louisa Doncaster née Barber, of The Grange, Sandiacre.His father Robert was born in 1873 in Sandiacre and his mother Gertrude Loiuse Barber was born in 1874 in Long Eaton, they were married in 1896 , their marriage was recorded in the Shardlow Registration District. they went on to have 4 children all born in Sandiacre , Robert Ivan b1897, Raymond b1899, Alan Clement Barber b1901 and Gertrude May b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at the Grange, Sandiacre and are shown as Robert 38 yrs a director of a screw manufacturer, he is living with his wife Gertude Loiusa 37 yrs and their children Robert Ivan 14 yrs a scholar, Raymond 12 yrs a scholar, Alan Clement Barber 10 yrs and Gertrude May 5 yrs , also at the address are two servants , a cook and a housemaid

Second Lieutenant Robert Ivan Doncaster, 15th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed in action on 1st July 1916, he had served in France since 12th May 1916. He is buried in Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille.
