Leonard Leslie was born in Nottingham in 1892 and was the son of Arthur Alfred and Harriet Eleanor Dawson of Warwick Rd, Mapperley Park, NottinghamIn the 1911 census Leonard Leslie Dawson is shown as 19 years of age, single and a clerk. He is living with his grandmother Sarah Dawson 91 yrs, a widow, and his brother Arthur Harold 31 years, a manager of a lace factory at 11 Park Valley, Nottingham. Also at the address are two servants. He married Ethel Gauntley, daughter of Thomas Fox and Emelia Gauntley, of West Bridgford, at St. Giles' Church at West Bridgford on 1st December 1916.Priobate proven at Nottingham on 27th January 1920. It shows him as Leonard Leslie Dawson of 'Araluen', Warwick Road, Mapperley Park, Nottingham, Second Lieutenant in H M Army died 27th May 1918 in France. Administration awarded to Ethel Dawson widow and Thomas Norris, gentleman. Effects: £2043 19 shillings and 10 pence.
He was killed in action with 1st Battalion of his regiment on 27th May 1918. He is buried in Jonchery-sur-Vesle British Cemetery.(I.B.24)His brother Arthur Harold served in the Great War in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was killed in action on 2nd April 1917 and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery 22.E.19a.
Wedding announcement published in the Nottingham Evening Post dated 1st December 1916 :- “DAWSON – GAUNTLEY. – On December 1st, at St. Giles's Church, West Bridgford, by Rev. Hargreaves, Second-Lieut. S. L. [sic] Dawson, son of the late A. A. Dawson and Mrs. Dawson, of Mapperley Park, to Ethel, eldest daughter of Mr. & Mrs. T. F. [Thomas Fox and Emelia] Gauntley, West BridgfordNotice published in the Nottingham Evening Post, 27 May 1919: “DAWSON. – In proud and loving memory of Leonard Leslie Dawson, Lieut., 1st Sherwood Foresters, reported missing, since reported killed in action, France, May 27th, 1918, dearly loved husband of Ethel Dawson, and beloved son of the late G. A. and Mrs. Dawson, Mapperley Park.
