Family History

William Cecil Catherall was born 6th June 1897 and was the son of Jonathan and Margaret Frazer Catherall, of Hawkesbury, Flinthshire . He was a bank apprentice before the war. The family was at Hawkesbury in the 1911 census and were shown as Jonathan 50 yrs secretary to a colliery company he is living with his second wife Margaret Anne Catherall nee Edwards (born 1867 Buckley ) and his children William Cecil 13yrs and Ann Catherine 12yrs , it was stated on the census that Jonathan had been married to his wife Margaret Ann for a year. (their marriage was recorded in in 1910 in Hawarden, Flintshire. It appears his mother Margaret Frazer died in 1897 aged 39 yrs, the death was recorded in the Chester Registration District

Military History

Second Lieutenant William Cecil Catherall enlisted on 29th November 1915 and was posted to The London Regiment (Artist’s Rifles). He was commissioned to the Northamptonshire Regiment, 24th March, 1917 and served with the 3rd battalion Northamptonshire Regiment . At the time of his death he was attached to the 1/5th battalion Norfolk Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd November 1917 in Egypt, his name is commemorated on the Jerusalem Memorial in Israel.
