Family History

Arthur Wall was born in 1888 in Wollaton and was the son of John a colliery foreman and Martha Hall née Rogers of Wollaton, Nottingham. His father John was born in 1856 in Newstead and his mother Martha Rogers was born in 1857 in Wollaton, they were married in 1876 in Nottingham and went on to have 8 children , all of whom were born in Wollaton , they were :- John Henry b1877, Alfred b1879, Alice b1881, Sam b1882, Matilda b1883 William Henry b1886, Arthur b1888, Nellie b1892. Arthur marries his wife May Shelton in Nottingham in 1910 and they live with his parents at Wollaton. In the 1911 census the family are living in Wollaton (no address given) and are shown as John 55 yrs a colliery foreman, he is living with his wife Martha 54 yrs and their children , Sam 29 yrs a colliery banksman and Nellie 19 yrs no occupation listed also living with them is their daughter in law May Hall (wife of Arthur) 25 yrs born Nether Broughton, Leicestershire Arthur Hall himself is 23 yrs a coal miner and is boarding at 29 East Ave, Woodlands, Doncaster he is living with William Hill 31 yrs a coal miner and his wife and family.

Military History

Private Arthur Wall, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards, he landed in France on 6th October 1914 and was wounded 28th October 1914, a report of which was published on 20th January 1915 in the Nottingham Evening Post. He was later awarded the Military Medal, (London Gazette 28th September 1917) probably for the opening phase of Third Ypres, he was killed in action at Cambrai on 1st December 1917. He is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval
