Family History

Leonard was born in 1897 in Wollaton and was the son of Enos a farm labourer and and Emma Jane Upton née Trinder, of Lockwell Hill Farm, Farnsfield, Southwell, Notts. His father was born in 1872 in Bourton, Oxfordshire and his mother Emma Jane Trinder was born in 1872 in Chedworth, Gloucestershire, they were married in 1892 , their marriage is recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went to have 9 children all of whom were born in Wollaton (except Edith Mary who was born in Strelley,) Enos Arthur b1894 (died 15th April 1910) Elsie b1896, Leonard b1897, Nellie Gladys B1900, Edith Mary 1901, James Harold b1904, Jack Eric b1906, Amy b1908 and Louis Enos b1910. In the 1911 census the family are living at White Lodge, Wollaton and are shown as Enos 39 yrs a farm labourer, head of the family, he is living with his wife Emma Jane 39 yrs and their children Leonard 14 yrs a farm labourer , Nellie Gladys 11 yrs, Edith Mary 9 yrs James Harold 7 yrs, Jack Eric 5 yrs, Amy 3 yrs and Louis Enos 9 months.

Military History

Driver Leonard Upton, enlisted on 28th August 1915 in Nottingham he was 19 yrs and 6 months old, he was living at White Lodge, Old Park Wollaton, he was a farm labourer and his religion was that of Church Of England, he was posted as a driver into the Royal Field Artillery and served with 4th Brigade Royal Field Artillery. He landed in France on 4th March 1916, he died of wounds on 23rd April 1918. He is buried in Longpre-Les-Corps Saints British Cemetery.(grave ref D.1).

In memoriam published 23rd April 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “UPTON. – In loving memory of Driver Leonard Upton, R.F.A., died of wounds April 23rd, 1918. – Sadly missed by his chums of A/14, R.F.A.” [Not commemorated on Farnsfield memorial.
