James Mather was born in 1886 at Wollaton and was the son of the late George a colliery labourer and Martha Mather née Taylor of Colliery Lane Wollaton, Nottingham. His father was born in 1847 at Crich, Derbyshire, he died in Nottingham in 1915 aged 68 yrs, his mother Martha Taylor was born in 1847 at Cromford, Derbyshire they were married on 11th September 1871 at St Mary's Church, Cromford, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 2 died in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were George b1873 Normaton, their remaining children were all born in Wollaton and were Mary b1875, Henry b1878,Matilda b1879, Frederick b1881, Clara b1882, Sylvester b1885, James b1886, Arthur b1887 and Daisy b1893. In the 1911 census the family are living at Wollaton, Nottingham and are shown as George 64 yrs a colliery labourer, he is living with his wife Martha 64 yrs and their children, Matilda 32 yrs no occupation listed, Frederick 30 yrs a colliery labourer, Sylvester 26 yrs a stationary engine stoker at colliery, James 25 yrs a coal miner, Arthur 24 yrs a colliery labourer and Daisy 18 yrs no occupation listed.

Military History

Private James Mather enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards, he was killed in action on 31st July 1917 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, Belgium panel 9 and 11
