Ernest Taylor Eastwood was born in 1877 and baptised on 1st April 1877 he was the son of the late Simon Thomas a stone mason, and Ellen Eastwood née Taylor. Simon Thomas was born in 1841 at Radcliffe on Trent he died in 1906 aged 66 yrs, Ellen Taylor was born in 1842 at Normanton, they were married in 1863 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 5 children.In 1911 his widowed mother Ellen Eastwood is 68 yrs and is living with her son William 44 yrs a stone mason they are living at Bingham Road, Radcliffe on Trent In 1911 Ernest is a lodger living at Pinewood, Holland Road, Felixstow, he is shown as being 34 yrs single and a electrician with the Royal Engineers he is living with Florence Mahala Drage (née Clark ) 30 yrs married living on Private means. Ernest had an illegitimate daughter Winifred Ellen Eastwood born 29th August 1912 at Ipswich (mothers surname is Clark on the birth index however no marriage found for Eastwood/Clark on the freebdm index)

Military History

Lieutenant Ernest Taylor Eastwood enlisted on 15th February 1895 at Derby he was 18 years old and was a stone mason. Posted to the Royal Engineers he served on the home front until 11th June 1900. He served in South Africa from 12th June 1900 until 28th October 1902. Retuning to England served at home until 12th March 1906 when he served in Malta and India until 7th Jane 1911. Serving on the home front until 31st December 1916 when he was discharged from the Army at his own request in order to be commissioned as a Lieutenant . He was gazetted as Lieutenant on 1st November 1918 with the Royal Flying Corps.

Extra Information

Ernest Taylor Eastwood died in Radcliffe on Trent, July 11th 1918. The cause of his death was carcinoma of the rectum and secondary carcinoma of the liver. His eldest brother William was present at his death which was certified by local Radcliffe on Trent doctor, Dr. Allaway. His occupation is given as Lieutenant, Royal Flying Corps. His will gives his rank as Lieutenant and date of death as 11th July 1918. Administration to Henry John Eastwood, brother, works manager. His brother William Eastwood died in 1923.Ernest was buried 15th July 1918 Radcliffe on Trent cemetery.
