Edward Stretton was born in 1889. He was the husband of Ellen Elizabeth Stretton, born in 1891 also in Sneinton. The couple lived at 8 Academy Place, Carrington, Nottingham, before moving to 10 Camden Street, Sneinton Road, Nottingham. Ellen Elizabeth married Arthur Fisher in 1918.
Stretton was called up for service and after training he was drafted to France as part of 'C' Battery, 152nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. His battery took part in the Battle of Arras and he was killed in action on 16/05/1917 and buried at Roclincourt Military Cemetery (III. B. 13.)
Death notice published 7th July 1917 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STRETTON. – Killed in action May 13th, 1917, [1] Signaller E. Stretton, R.F.A. The heavenly stars shine out upon that distant grave, on the one we loved but not to think of thee. – From loving mother, sisters, and brothers-in-law, Walter, and Bob in France.” In memoriam published 13th May 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “STRETTON. – In loving memory of E. Stretton, killed in action, May 13th, 1917, Signaller, R.F.A.
