Family History

James Smith was born in 1894 at Nottingham, he married Elizabeth Kirkby (born 20th February 1893) in 1914 at Nottingham, they lived at 22 Byron Street, Sneinton, Nottingham and had a daughter Emily born 4th November 1915. Commencing 5th March 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week.

Military History

Private James Smith enlisted on 3rd May 1915 at Nottingham, giving his address as 35 Camden Street, Sneinton Road, Nottingham, he was 21 yrs and 1 month old he was posted to the 1/7th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 1st June 1916. He was killed in action 1st July 1916, in the attack on the German positions at Gommecourt, France, on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Having no known grave his name is Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Pier and Face 10 C 10 D and 11 A.
