George Bown was born in 1893 at Farndon and was the son of Thomas a farm labourer and Mary Elizabeth Bown née Flowers of Farndon village. His father Thomas was born in 1862 at Farndon and his mother was born in 1864 at Marston, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1886 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Thomas William b1887, John Edward b1889, George b1892 and Sidney b1903 all were born at Farndon. In the 1911 George is living with his father in Farndon village and they are shown as Tom 48 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his sons George 18 yrs a wood working machine painter and Sidney 8 yrs. In the same 1911 census we find his mother is living with her widowed mother at Foston village near Grantham and are shown as Mary Newman 74 yrs a widow she is living with her married daughter Mary Elizabeth Bown 47 yrs a charwoman and her granddaughter Lizzie Flowers 30 yrs a dress maker
Corporal George Bown enlisted on 23rd November 1914 at Newark, he served with the 8th Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) He landed in France on 29th June 1915 and was wounded by a gun shot in the knee. He was returned to England for treatment. He was discharged from the Army on 25th April 1918 due to his wound and was awarded a Silver War Badge Number 406234. He was staying with is sister at 56 Fitzneal Street Shepherds Bush, London whilst undergoing treatment for his wound and died on 22nd July 1920. His body was returned to his family at Farndon and he was buried at Farndon Cemetery.
Article published 24th July 1920 in the Newark Herald :- Third son of Thomas & Mary Elizabeth Bown of Farndon. A Territorial embodied with the Sherwood Foresters on outbreak of war. Received a bullet wound in the knee from which he never recovered. Expired at the home of his sister, 56 Fitzneal Street, Shepherds Bush. Staying with her while undergoing treatment in London.
