James Larratt Stanley was born in 1898 he was the son of William a bricklayers labourer and Annie Elizabeth Stanley née Smith and the brother of Jane Stanley b1897. William was born in 1876 in Derby, Annie Elizabeth Smith was born in 1876 at Nottingham, they were married in 1896 at Nottingham and went on to have 5 children, sadly three were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 32 Thorneywood Rise and later at 4 Sneinton Road (both Nottingham).

Military History

Private James Larratt Stanley, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 2/4th Battalion King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he died of wounds on 21st November 1917. He is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt.

Nottingham Evening Post Roll of Honour (abridged) December 6th 1917: 'Stanley. Died of wounds November 21st Private James Larratt Stanley, KOYLI, 4 Sneinton Road. Broken hearted mother, father, sister, brother, grandma also Sue and Nancy.' In memoriam published 20th November 1918 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- STANLEY. – In ever-loving memory of our dear son, Pte. James Larratt Stanley, K.O.Y.L.I., died of wounds November 20th, 1917.
