Father: William Gant, born in 1866 at Harmston, Lincolnshire and working as a farrier. Mother: Annie Gant, born in 1866 at Nottingham. Brother: William Henry, born in 1897 and employed as a lace stock room worker, Charles Sidney, born in 1901 and Albert Edward, born in 1906. All the children were born in Nottingham. The family lived at 70 Sneinton Boulevard, Nottingham but later moved to 35 Sneinton Boulevard.
Rifleman Gant volunteered for service with the King's Royal Rifle Corps, holding No. R/11305, and training at Winchester. He arrived in France on 30/07/1915and his service was such that by 1918 he was granted a commission on 25/06/1918. He was killed in action three weeks before the fighting finished, and was buried in Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref V.A.23).
His brother, 3440 Private William Gant, RAMC, a member of Dakeyne Street Lads' Club who served in France from 8 July 1915, was awarded the DCM in 1916 for conspicuous gallantry in bringing in wounded men under heavy fire (London Gazette 10 March 1916).In memoriam published 17th October 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “GANT. – In loving memory of our dear son, 2nd-Lieut. A. C. Gant, killed in action October 17th, 1918. The supreme sacrifice. Too dearly loved to be ever forgotten. – Sorrowing mother and father.GANT. – To the proud remembrance of our dear brother, 2nd-Lieut. A. C. Gant, 2nd King's Royal Rifles, killed in action October 17th, 1918.
