Family History

Henry was born in 1893 at Nottingham, he was the son of Robert a dyer and Ellen Hibbert née Taylor of 4 Upper Eldon Street, Sneinton, and the brother of Robert, and Lily Hibbert. Robert was born in 1853 and Ellen Taylor was born in 1856 both were born in Nottingham, they were married in 1877 at Nottingham, they went on to have 10 children, sadly 4 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family lived at 19, Byron Street, Sneinton Nottingham Robert is 53 years of age and a dyer, he is living with his wife Ellen 55 yrs and 3 of their children, Robert 23 yrs, Harry 18 yrs and Lilley 14 yrs. Henry married Maud Ida Singleton (born 1st June 1891 ) on 27th May 1912 at the Parish Church at Sneinton, they had the following children, Caroline born 15th September 1912, Thomas Henry born 1914 (died 3rd December 1917 of pneumonia) and Harry Hibbert born 15th June 1917 . The family lived at 3 Mays Place Keswick Street, Nottingham. Commencing 24th March 1919 his widow was awarded a pension of 25 shillings and 5 pence a week.

Military History

Private Henry Hibbert enlisted on 1st September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 22 yrs and 210 days his occupation was that of a stoker, he initially served with the service number 14122 in the North Staffordshire Regiment and landed in France on 4th January 1915. He was wounded in action a gun shot wound to his right arm on 9th May 1915 from which he was treated and recovered. He was wounded in action again on 5th August 1917 a gun shot wound to his left arm for which he was admitted to the 35 general hospital at Calais. He was returned to England for further treatment. Once he recovered he returned to France on 29th March 1918 and was transferred to the 1st battalion Cheshire Regiment. He was killed in action on 2nd September 1918 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial France.

Extra Information

His brother Private George Hibbert was stationed at Hillsborough Barracks, Sheffield on the outbreak of war and the battalion reached France on 08/09/1914. At some point he became a prisoner of war (possibly in October 1914), but was released and demobilised at the end of the war. He died on 28/02/1919 and was buried in the General Cemetery, Nottingham.
