Father: John Henson Culley, born in 1872 in Nottingham and working as an insurance agent. Mother: Elizabeth Culley, born in 1873 in Nottingham. Brother: Horace Henson Culley, born in 1898 in Nottingham and working as a commercial clerk Sister: Ethel May, born in Nottingham in 1908. The family lived at 30 Crown Street, Nottingham before moving to 26 Holborn Avenue, Sneinton Dale, Nottingham. During 1911 Frank was confined in the City Isolation Hospital, Hucknall Road, Nottingham.
L. Sgt. Culley was called up for service and trained with the 7th Battalion, Sherwood foresters, No. 3956. He attested on 22/03/1915, and was appointed lance corporal on 22/09/1916 and corporal on 22/04/1916 He embarked from Folkestone on 18/07/1916, reaching Boulogne the same day. He was transferred to England on 04/12/1916 having been discovered to be under-age! Whilst serving at the Curragh, Ireland he was granted proficiency pay on 20/10/1917. Finally he was posted to 1/9th battalion, and reverted to private on 04/04/1918 He took part in the fighting in August 1918 as the German army reached the point of exhaustion, and was killed in action on 01/08/1918. He was buried at Raferie Quarry British cemetery, Villemontoire, Soissons.
In memoriam published 1st August 1919 in the Nottingham Evening Post :- “CULLEY. – In loving memory of Sergt. Frank Culley, killed in action August 1st, 1918. Never forgotten. – Mother, father, sister, and brother. “CULLEY. – In loving remembrance of Sergt. F. Culley. Royal Scots, killed in France August 1st, 1918.
