He was the son of Frederick and Fanny Jane Cheesman (née Cole) and the brother of Harriet Elizabeth (later Foster) and Doris Kathleen Cheesman. In 1911 they lived at 'Sunnyside' Wellington Road, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire. He was the husband of Florence May (née Harper) Cheesman. They married in 1918 (A/M/J) and lived at 71 St Stephen's Road Sneinton Nottingham where William died on 11 April 1919. In 1939 Florence Cheesman (b. 1897) was a confectionery shop assistant and auxiliary nurse living at 20 Edwinstone Drive Nottingham.
He enlisted on 4 September 1914 and was discharged wounded 4 May 1917 (Medal Roll). Julian Putkowski notes 'From his WIA date he seems originally to be 1st Bn Lincs. but his low number may indicate a Terrier or Special Reservist.' He died on 11 April 1919 at 71 St Stephen's Road, Sneinton and was buried with military honours in Nottingham Church Cemetery.
No CWGC, UKSWD or Soldiers' Effects Register records. Thanks to Julian Putkowski for this identification. William's father Frederick appears as Cheeseman in the marriage index and on the 1881 Census. William is entered as Cheeseman in the birth index but Cheesman on the Medal Roll, 1911 Census and a notice in a local paper of his death. Nottingham Evening Post, 'Deaths', 14 April 1919: 'On April 11th at 71 St Stephen's Road William Herbert (Bert) the devoted and beloved husband of Florence May Cheesman (née Harper) and son of Mr F Cheesman of Mablethorpe late 10th Lincolnshire Regiment aged 24 years. Not lost but gone before. Interment Church Cemetery Wednesday 2.30. Military funeral.'
