Family History

William Bentley was born in 1876 and was the son of the late Charles a boot and shoe maker and Sarah Bentley née Chapman of 33 Sneinton Hollows Nottingham. Charles was born in 1833 at East Leake, he died in 1885 aged 52 Sarah Ann Chapman was born in 1844 at Sneinton, they were married on 11th February 1869 at Holy Trinity Church, Nottingham, they went on to have 8 children.

Military History

Private William Bentley enlisted on 9th December 1915 at Nottingham, giving his age as 39 yrs and 9 months, he was living at 33 Sneinton Hollows, Nottingham. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 27th March 1916 at Derby, he was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment and landed in France on 5th July 1916, he served in France until 16th August 1917 when he was returned to England and was posted to the Labour Corps. He was discharged from the Army on 8th April 1918 as no longer fit for war service and was issued with a Silver War Badge no 34629. He died on 9th June 1918 with cancer of the neck and is buried in Nottingham General Cemetery.

Nottingham Evening Post 11/6/1918 Roll of Honour: 'Bentley. On the 9th inst. William (Billie) of the Sherwood Foresters second beloved son of Sarah A Bentley and the late Charles Bentley of 33 Sneinton Hollows. Peace after pain. Funeral General Cemetery (top end) Wednesday 2.30.' He is not listed on the CWGC. His brother Private Arthur Bentley, served with the 1/5th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, he was killed in action on 15th September 1916. Posted missing on 15 September 1916 but his death was not confirmed until the following year. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial (Pier and Face 10 B 11 B and 12 B).
