William Baker was born in 1882 and was the son of Charles a lace curtain maker and Maria Baker née Vickery of 14 Wyville Street, Nottingham. Charles was born in 1848 at Tiverton, Devon, Maria Vickery was born in 1851 at Chard, Somerset, married in 1870 at Chard they went on to have 10 children, sadly 3 died in infancy or early childhood. In 1911 the family were living at 14 Wyville Street, Nottingham, Charles is 63 yrs and a lace curtain maker, he is living with his wife Maria 60 yrs and two of their children, William 29 yrs a horse driver and Albert 22 yrs a hosiery machinist. William married Sarah Phillips (born 31st January 1887) on 12th June 1916 at St Matthias Church, Nottingham, they lived at 14 Wyville Street, Nottingham. Commencing 19th November 1917 his widow was awarded a pension of 13 shillings and 9 pence a week.
Private William Baker enlisted at Nottingham, he initially served with the service number 53595 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment, he died of wounds on 7th May 1917 whilst serving with the 120th Company Machine Gun Corps. He is buried at La Chapelette British and Indian Cemetery, Peronne.
Nottingham Evening Post In Memoriam (abridged) 7/5/1918: 'Baker. In loving memory of my dear husband Pte William Baker MGC died of wounds May 7th 1917, aged 34 years. - From his loving wife Sarah.'
