Walter Draper was born in Scarrington on 30 September 1895, the son of Thomas and Maria Elizabeth Draper (née Shephard, alternative spellings on civil records). His father Thomas was born in Scarrington in 1863 and his mother Maria Elizabeth in Car Colston, Nottinghamshire, in 1871. They were married in 1892 (reg. Nottingham) and by 1911 had had eight children, one of whom died in early childhood: George William b. 1893, Thomas Henry b. 1894 d. 1896 and Walter b. 30 September 1895 who were born in Scarrington, and John b. 1897, Frederick b. 1900, Annie b. 1903, Emma b. 1905 and Albert b. 1908 who were all born in Radcliffe on Trent. Three of the children, John, Frederick and Emma were deaf and dumb. In 1901 Thomas, a general labourer, and Maria, a lace beader (at home) were living at Bolton Terrace, Radcliffe on Trent, with their children George (7), Walter (5), John (3) and Frederick (under 1 year). A fifth son, Thomas Henry, had died in 1896. By 1911 Thomas was employed by the County Council as a road repairer and the family was living in Gilmans Yard, Radcliffe on Trent. Only four of their seven children were in the home on the night of the census: George and Walter, who were both gardeners (market garden), Emma and Albert. Their two other sons, John and Fred, were pupils at the Royal Deaf and Dumb Institution in Derby while their daughter Annie was living in Nottingham with her maternal aunt, Sarah Younger (née Shephard) and her husband Arthur.
Private Walter Draper served with the 10th (Prince of Wales's Own) Hussars. He was killed in action on 13th May 1915 during the battle for Frezenberg Ridge. Walter has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium (Panel 20).
