Family History

William Charles Dumbarton was born in 1891 he was the son of Charles a mill labourer and Emily Dumbarton née Free and the brother of Minnie, Lily, Jenny, Fred and Gerty Dumbarton. Charles was born in 1862 at Amersham, Emily Free was born in 1869 at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire they were married in 1888 at Amersham and had 8 children, sadly 1 died in infancy. In 1901 they lived on High Street Amersham. William Charles married Agnes Barker (born 22nd April 1895,) their marriage was on 19th January 1914 at the Parish Church, Edwinstowe. they had a daughter Edna May Dumbarton who was born on 13th June 1914, they lived at Portland Row, Edwinstowe. Commencing 14th January 1918 his widow was awarded a pension of 18 shillings and 9 pence a week.

Military History

Private William Charles Dumbarton was called up for war on 22nd January 1917 at Retford, he was mobilised on 14th February 1917 he served with the 66th Auxiliary Petrol Company Army Service Corps. He embarked from Southampton on 1st June 1917 landing at Le Harve the following day. He was killed by shrapnel on 11th July 1917 and is buried at Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension Nord Grave Reference: III D 258
