Charles Edward Bentley was born in 1874 and married Alice Maria Broxholme in 1904 at Huddersfield, they went on to have a daughter Eva May in 1905 they lived at 54, Fleming House Lane, Dalton, Huddersfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at 52 Fleming House Lane, Dalton Huddersfield and are shown as Charles Edward Bentley 32 yrs , no occupation is living on private means, he is living with wife Alice Maria 32 yrs and their daughter Eva Mary 6 yrs of age.
Lance Corporal Charles Edward Bentley, enlisted at Huddersfield and served with the 3/5th Battalion Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment), working as a postman at Clipstone Camp, was found drowned on 30th January 1916. He had been missing since 17th January 1916. His body was returned to his family and buried at Kirkheaton Cemetery, Yorkshire
Article published 31st January 1916 in the Nottingham Daily Express :- “TRAGIC DISCOVERY AT CLIPSTONE CAMP. “Body of Regimental Postman Recovered from Dyke. “A painful discovery was made yesterday afternoon [30th January 1916] by a soldier in training at Clipstone Camp. Private Slater, of the West Riding Regiment, was walking by the side of the flood-dyke, near the camp, when he observed the body of another soldier in the water. “He recovered it, and found it to be that of Private Charles Edward Bentley, the regimental postman, who had been missing for some days. “Private Bentley, who was well-known in the regiment, was 41 years of age. He hailed from Huddersfield, where his wife and family reside.
