Family History

Percy Cyril Cox was born in 1895 he was the son of Henry Edwin a hosiery manufacturer and Eliza Cox née Metcalf and the brother of Gladys Irene Cox of Chestnut Grove Radcliffe on Trent. Henry Edwin was born in 1860 at Nottingham, Eliza Metcalf was born in 1869 also in Nottingham, they were married on 30th December 1893 at St Mary's Church, Radcliffe on Trent they had a daughter Gladys also born in 1896. In 1911 the family are living at Chestnut Grove, Radcliffe on Trent, Henry Edwin 51 yrs is a hosiery manufacturer is living with his wife Eliza 42 yrs and their children, Gladys and Percy both of whom are 15 yrs of age and are school children, also at the address is a domestic servant.

Military History

Second Lieutenant Percy Cyril Cox attested on 24th September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 19 yrs and 220 days his occupation was that of a hosier. On 26th January 1915 he posted to the Second battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment landing in France on 26th January 1915and was promoted to Lance Corporal on 26th July 1915. Wound on 9th August 1915 (a gun shot wound to the left leg) he was admitted to hospital on 12th August 1915. After recovering he was posted to the 3rd battalion on 29th October 1915. Discharged to a commission on 31st December 1915 he joined the Northumberland Fuisiliers and returned to France in July 1916. He was reported missing on 28th April 1917 during the Battle of Arras (Capture of Vimy Ridge) April 9-May 16 1917. Having no known grave hius name is commemorated on the Arras memorial Bay 2 & 3
